Office Technology

Ruth.Levy@sunywcc.edu

Professor Ruth E. Levy joined the WCC faculty in September, 1969, as an instructor of Secretarial Science, later known as Office Technologies.  During the next three decades, she has had the privilege of guiding thousands of students through the process of learning how to use the typewriter and later the computer as a tool to help them become not only better students, but more importantly to give them vital skills that every person needs for success in both their personal and professional lives.  In 1975, Professor Levy, along with Professors John Christesen, Peter Doukas, and Fred O’Connor, became one of the original four faculty advisers to the Delta Chapter of Alpha Beta Gamma.  According to Professor Hugh McCabe, this group surely belonged in the listings of the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-serving faculty group of any collegiate organization in history—27 consecutive years—until Professor O’Connor’s retirement in 2001. Professor Levy’s specific area of expertise is business writing, and her favorite course is Business Communications, which she believes should be required of every business student on campus.  As a member of the Association for Business Communications for the past 30 years, she keeps abreast of the changes in this dynamic discipline by attending professional meetings and diligently reading journals related to the field. She holds a BA magna cum laude in Business Education from Hunter College, an M.Ed. summa cum laude in higher education from Pennsylvania State University, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from Iona College.  In addition to the Association for Business Communication, she is a member of a number of professional organizations including Delta Pi Epsilon honorary business education fraternity, National Business Education Association, and the Westchester County Business Education Association.  She serves her community as a member of the Eastchester Youth Advisory Board and the Coalition for Mutual Respect.  Professor Levy is very proud of her own exceptional academic record and was indeed thrilled to be named as a winner of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in May, 2002. Professor Levy also serves as the national faculty coordinator to Lambda Alpha Beta Gamma, the national honor society for high school business students.  In 2001, the first two chapters were chartered right here in Westchester County at Yorktown High School and Eastchester High School. Professor Levy enjoys taking an active role in each year’s Delta Chapter initiation and banquet, where she lends her musical talents to the event by accompanying the group in singing our national anthem.  In her leisure time, she enjoys playing the piano, singing in her temple's choir; and teaching music in local synagogues.  She has also served for many years as the faculty co-adviser to another WCC Club, the American Jewish Friendship Club. Professor Levy has been married since 1981 to Martin Schudroff; they reside in Ardsley with their son, Daniel, who attends the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. Teaching is the joy of her life.  She feels blessed to have been given the chance to exchange ideas and knowledge with so many fine students and colleagues during her long tenure here at WCC.  She also is delighted to have worked closely with so many fine ABG officers, members, co-advisers, and especially to have been influenced by the inspired leadership of Professor John Christesen, who she believes is the “guiding force” behind the truly excellent honor society into which ABG has evolved.
